Barney Holbrook Hilton - 3/25/2009

Class of 1933

Barney H. Hilton, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, neighbor and friend, died peacefully in the early morning hours of March 25, 2009. His good humor and optimism remained to the end. He resided at 2921 South 300 East in South Salt Lake, Utah at the time of his death.

Barney was born to Joseph Clarence and Gladys Richins Hilton on September 1, 1915 in Pleasant Grove, Utah.

He spent his childhood and early adult years in Pleasant Grove, graduating from Pleasant Grove High School, Class of 1933. He married Vera Lee Beckett on March 17, 1939 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married for 66 years until her death in June 2005.

Dad loved playing saxophone and clarinet with dance bands throughout Utah and Wyoming during his younger years and continued to do so throughout his life until arthritis took his ability to find the keys on his sax.

He enjoyed fishing into his eighty's first with his sons and then with his grandsons. Dad was first and foremost a family man who loved having his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren around him and they loved him also.

He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served his church in many capacities during his life, but most enjoyed his missionary service: The Netherlands from 1936-1939; Nauvoo from 1981-1983; Tallahassee, Florida Mission from 1985-1986; Atlanta, Georgia Temple from 1991-1992; the latter three missions with his eternal companion, Mom.

He is the father of seven children: R. Donn Hilton (Katy); Michal Miller (Allen); Patricia, deceased; Stephanie Glende (Steve); Sally Everett (Jim); Sydney Whipple (Doug); Mark B. Hilton, deceased (Marinda). He also has 29 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brothers, Joe Hilton, John Hilton, Glade Hilton (Bonnie); and sister, Clare Huish. Preceded in death by sister, Phyllis Holien.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Central Park Ward Chapel, 304 East 2700 South. Friends and family may visit on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the Church on Saturday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the services.
