Jay Pulsipher Hawkes - 2/3/2012

Class of 1945

Jay Pulsipher Hawkes died on February 3, 2012 in Provo, Utah. He was born February 15, 1927 to Mirle Marriner and Estella Pulsipher Hawkes in Brigham City, Utah. Jay graduated from Box Elder High School, then enlisted in the Navy and served honorably during World War II. Upon returning home, he married his high school sweetheart, Ilah Hunsaker in the Logan Temple on June 9, 1947. Together they reared their family of seven children in Honeyville, Utah for 52 years. He cared lovingly for Ilah for many years before she passed away in March 2000. He married V’Laine Matthews September 9, 2000.

Jay graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Industrial Arts and Elementary Education and later returned to USU to receive his Masters Degree and Administrative/Supervisory Endorsement in Education. He spent most of his career as a principal in Box Elder School District retiring as principal at Bear River Middle School. He enjoyed golfing with his sons and siblings, hiking with his children and grandchildren, putting together family slide shows and oil painting. He also enjoyed carpentry and the family looked forward each summer to the newest addition to the house. In recent years, he loved flower gardening and traveling with his wife, V’Laine. Jay was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully and tirelessly in many positions and callings. He loved the scriptures and wanted to be remembered as a teacher of gospel doctrine. He fulfilled a service mission with Ilah and was a temple worker in the Ogden Temple for 11 years with V’Laine. He was never happier than when he was in the temple or teaching the temple preparation classes.

Jay is survived by his wife, V’Laine Matthews Hawkes, one brother, Ezra Lee Hawkes, and a one sister, Iona Scothern (Clinton); sons, Steve Hawkes (Rosemary), Mel Hawkes (Margie), Tim Hawkes (Cindy), Kelly Hawkes (Colleen), Jon Hawkes (Christy), and a daughter, Wendy Merrill (Jeff). He is also survived by V’Laine’s children Suzanne Buchanan (Steve) and Paul Matthews (Ann). He has 28 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ilah, a daughter, Rebecca, his parents and seven siblings.
