JoAnn Twitchell Holt - 1/1/2011

Class of 1964

Enterprise, Utah - Our beloved JoAnn Twitchell Holt, 64, died Saturday, January 1, 2011, in an automobile accident, near Enterprise, Utah. She was born September 17, 1946, in Cedar City, Utah to Charles and Etta Twitchell, and is the eldest of seven children. She married her high school sweetheart Robert Jay Holt on December 19, 1964, in the St. George LDS Temple.

Mom was raised in Enterprise and graduated from Enterprise High School, where she was valedictorian and student body president. During these years, she helped her father raise potatoes and hay by working long hours driving potato trucks and running hay equipment. She also attended the College of Southern Utah and Dixie College briefly after she was married. Perhaps because mom was unable to complete college, she strongly encouraged her children to do so.

In 1966, she and dad purchased an 80-acre farm in Beryl, Utah. This was the beginning of a long farming life together. She helped dad raise potatoes and barley by changing the siphon pipes, riding the planter, and driving trucks. The couple welcomed 14 children into their home, and each time were “the proudest parents in the world.” Dad considered her to be a “pillar of strength” for the family throughout her life. She was “a real angel - no one could ask for a better wife.”

Her children also are grateful for such a tender mother. The family moved into the Newcastle LDS Ward in 1969, where they were members until 1982. The family then moved to Enterprise and became members of the Enterprise LDS 1st Ward. These were wonderful years for an ever-growing family. Mom held numerous callings in addition to the heavy responsibilities of raising children. Her church callings included Relief Society president, Young Women president, Primary teacher, Den leader, and Cubmaster.

When the family sent one child to Enterprise grade school before the move to Enterprise, she brought the family together to sing “God Be with You Till We Meet Again,” even though the family was apart for only a part of the day. The family knows she fully understands the message of this hymn - and we also plan to meet her again.

Mom loved to garden and can the produce, much of which she gave away. She loved to give gifts and always made sure that her children and grandchildren were thought of on special occasions. She was supportive of special events and traveled thousands of miles around the country for her children and grandchildren.

Mom did an excellent job making special occasions exciting for the family. She had a wonderful sense of humor. She served others through acts of kindness such as tying quilts and making dinners for friends in need. She also helped by baking for weddings and many other occasions.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her daughter, JoLynn Holt. She is survived by her husband, Robert Jay Holt of Enterprise, Utah; her parents Charles and Etta Twitchell of Enterprise, Utah; her children: Randall and DeeDee Holt of Enterprise, Utah; Robin and Steven Horn of Solon, Ohio; Jared and Amy Holt of Enterprise, Utah; Donalee and Brad Breinholt of Tucson, Arizona; Charla and Kenneth Allen of Fort Collins, Colorado; Sara and Jesse Olsen of Fort Collins, Colorado; Melinda and Bret Bowler of Enterprise, Utah; Nancy and Ray Bradford of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania; James and Danika Holt of Sugar Land, Texas; Kimball and Shelley Holt of Cedar City, Utah; Kenley and Erin Holt of Hanford, California; Blake and Heather Holt of Provo, Utah; Ashla Holt of Enterprise, Utah; her 48 grandchildren - with two on the way; and her siblings: Nancy and Rhea Woods, of Wasilla, Alaska; Gail and Roy Wilcock, of Cedar City, Utah; Janis and Rudy Jones of Ogden, Utah; Donna Hulet of Cedar City, Utah; Charles and Maria Twitchell of Enterprise, Utah; and Steven and Clairene Twitchell of Enterprise, Utah.
