Roland Chambers Wright - 11/10/2010

Class of 1939

Roland Chambers Wright, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday morning, November 10, 2010. He said he wanted it mentioned that he died of lingering age. He would have been 90 years old on November 19th.

He was born November 19, 1920 to William S. and Lura Chambers Wright in Ogden, Utah.

He played the trumpet in the band in junior high school and high school. He was in the first junior class of the new Ogden High School and graduated in 1939. He sang in the Eighteenth Ward Male Chorus. He attended Weber College before serving 2 ½ years in the Spanish-American mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints laboring in Texas, Arizona, California and Colorado.

When he returned from his mission he married Ruth Barnett on October 25, 1944 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Their children are Robert (Janice) Wright, LaMar (MarJean) Wright, Rosalyn (Clyve) Findlay, Rodney (Gaylene) Wright, Kenny (Debbie) Wright, and Deanna (Mike) Kelsch. He is the proud grandfather of 25 grandchildren (all but three are married) and 40 great-grandchildren with 2 on the way.

Active in the LDS Church, he sang in ward choirs and the Ogden Tabernacle Choir before it was disbanded. He worked for the family clothing store, Taylor-Wright Company, for over 30 years as a salesman and office clerk. After the store was no longer in business he worked as a custodian for Ogden City Schools until he retired. After retirement he helped his sons, Kenny and LaMar in their sign businesses in Ogden.

He enjoyed traveling with family for visits and vacations. He enjoyed taking care of his yard and having his grandchildren visit and help him. He enjoyed the companionship of his cat Tootie. He and his wife enjoyed dancing with several dance groups in earlier years. After his father died, he spent many hours taking care of his mother visiting with her each day.

He is survived by his loving wife; children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren and sisters, Evelyn (John) Myers and Melba (Jack) Roe and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Velma Thomas and her husband, and a special granddaughter and grandson-in-law.

His funeral will be held at the Old Post Ward, 5191 Old Post Road, on Monday, November 15, 2010 at 11:00 a.m.

A viewing will be held at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. on Sunday, November 14th from 6 – 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday, Nov. 15th from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Interment in Ogden City Cemetery.
